Old Friend.

I was part of the school band. We stood in the front facing all the girls who prayed while we played the dhol,drum, and more. I think the purpose of the band was to simply wake the girls up or maybe to hide the ones who were not really singing, but moving their lips.

Why was she not wearing white and blue? The girls without the uniform were to form a seperate line. Shouldn't she be standing in that line? Ah, it was her first day at "my" School. I don't really remember or know where she came from. As everyone stood on the school ground for our morning prayers, along with them she stood towards the back of the ground. Not only she stood, but, she 'stood-out' wearing a purple velvet dress which was long, not long enough to cover her ankels. Perhaps her mother wanted her to show off her anklets. She was short for 5th grade, yet her presence was tall enough to be noticed.

She was fairest of them all with goldnish brown hair, when she laughed really hard her face turned pinkish red, her eyes were light brown with facial features so sharp. Her earlobes were little and attached to the side of her face. Her feet were small with toe nails painted red, like her lips. I wanted to have her earlobes. Really.

I am not sure how we started talking but we became good of friends. Then she left.....Reshma, The new girl at school moved yet again. I wonder where she came from and where she went? Though, her image remains in my mind - Beautiful.

@Vanathi,
Thank you and welcome to my blog :)

@Arjun,
Ahh, but i went back and saw that my comments were up and posted :)

@Anjul,
No Anjul its not the same reshma u are thinking. But she was definitely the reason why i posted this blog... Same names..and Resham is in LA right now(havnt seen/met her yet).....So was thinking about the name and remmebered my friend Reshma Laad.

@Dreamgirl,
Thank you miss. The reason i am not in touch with her cuz she moved away when we were in 6th ( i think) and i guess we were too young to know how to 'keep-in-touch' and cheris friendships... though i am glad over the years i've learned how to cherish memories..and hope the habit continutes.

@Susubala,
so sweet. Some connection "they" say.... beyond our understanding - perhaps.

@Rohit,

@Puneet,
i actually enjoyed the band and the prayers...(weird eh). and no i am not in touch with her.... i wasnt even after she left my school in india..

@dreamgirl,
Thank you! It feels good to know that i am 'known'
I lived in india untill i was in 8th standard(for 13 years). Then moved to the states. Been living here for the last 11 years. As far as # of years are concerned.... india still takes the lead. I finished rest of my education in the US. I definitely do miss india. Untill now all my family was here but now my in-laws are in india..and my husband and i very much miss being near them.

About childhood days, somehow i still manage to take trips back to india.... not always via the plane..but some through my thoughts and memories...and just bits and parts of de-ja-vu's.

@B&B,
I agree.

@Rohit,
=) ha!

you get at the heart of human angst over not being allowed to reconcile people's absences in our lives. with your post, you help people understand that things that impact us in our childhoods can stay with us well into adulthood. As for you and Reshma, I wish you well.
